Ontem vi um filme que achei muito interessante, intitulado The Lookout (2007). Nesse filme fala-se na história de Goldilocks e dos três ursos. Descobri hoje que existe um princípio Goldilocks, segundo o qual se deve evitar os extremos - o que remete talvez para o caminho do meio e que coincidentemente se relaciona com um livro que estou a começar a ler, o Kim, de Kipling.

No filme, o protagonista tem problemas de memória devido a um acidente. Um amigo recomenda-lhe que se ele quer contar uma história, para arrumá-la e conseguir encadeá-la numa sequência lógica, deve começar pelo fim.
- Start at the end. Can't tell a story if you don't know where it's going.
- The three bears find Goldilocks asleep in their beds. And then, um, she takes off.
- Exactly. All right, now, that's the end. What happened before that?

No fim, esse conselho acaba por ser útil para o protagonista, permitindo avançar com a sua própria vida. O acidente fora consequência de um erro seu e vitimara outras pessoas. O protagonista acaba por assumir que, para poder avançar, terá de integrar o acidente na sua própria história e tentar perdoar-se.
«I started skating again. I'm not as good as I used to be, but I'm okay. What happened that night along Route 24 is a part of me now. I just hope that one day Kelly will be ready to see me again and I can finally tell her what I've only been able to say in my dreams. Until then, all I can do is wake up, take a shower, with soap, and try to forgive myself. If I can do that, then maybe others will forgive me too. I don't know if that will happen, but I guess I'll just have to work backwards from there.»

Numa sequência de acasos, que têm lógica, pelo menos, dentro da minha perspectiva actual, há alguns aspectos a salientar. Primeiro é que quando cometemos um erro, temos de assumir responsabilidade, perdoar-nos, tentar não repetir e recomeçar de novo. O segundo, é que os nossos erros podem ter consequências imprevisíveis e que o bater de asas de uma borboleta pode mesmo causar um furacão do outro lado do mundo. Na tal sequência de acasos, isto liga-se ao filme que vi antes-de-ontem, os Crimes de Oxford (2008), em que o protagonista toma uma série de decisões que têm consequências catastróficas, que iniciam com este diálogo, aparentemente simples e optimista:
- You're happy, you only have to look at your face to see that.
- I try to be.
- How do you do it?
- It's easy. It's a case of going with the flow.
- And what if it goes badly?
- I'd rather make mistakes than do nothing. I'd rather mess up than miss out completely. It works for me. You should try it.
