No verão de 1928, Nolde notou que os seus girassóis ficavam muito altos, pelo que ele tinha de colocar a cabeça para trás para poder admirá-los. Nessa altura, começou a fazer muitas pinturas sobre esse tema, o que se julga que possa ter a ver com a sua admiração por Van Gogh, mas pode resultar também do seu amor pelos seus altos girassóis:
