Michael Thonet (1796-1871) foi um construtor de mobiliário alemão, que desenvolveu o processo de fabricar móveis de madeira curvada. A sua cadeira n.º 14, criada em 1859, tornou-se numa das cadeiras mais comercializadas de sempre e ainda hoje se vende (link, link e link)

Gosto de assistir à nova série Cosmos apresentada por Neil deGrasse Tyson. Ouvir as palavras de Tyson demonstra bem como vivemos num mundo maravilhoso, mesmo quando nos cingimos a factos científicos. Citando as palavras deste astrofísico, noutro contexto: «I know that the molecules in my body are traceable to phenomena in the cosmos. That makes me want to grab people on the street and say: ‘Have you HEARD THIS?»

Contudo, gosto também de outros mundos de pura imaginação, de fantasia e de magia, sob as mais diversas formas artísticas. Será que esse mundo fora da realidade é realmente oposto ao da ciência? Se falarmos de magia no sentido clássico, claro que sim (mas eu gostava que existisse, confesso!). Mas a imaginação é mais do que isso e é espantoso pensar que muito daquilo que era considerado simples magia há uns séculos atrás, é hoje puro facto científico. Einstein terá dito: «Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.»

No Dia Mundial da Energia, lembro Albert Einstein (1879-1955), cientista que revolucionou a Física moderna. Desenvolveu a teoria da Relatividade e descobriu  a "equivalência entre matéria e energia", traduzida na equação E = mc2. Recebeu em 1921 o Prémio Nobel da Física, por ter desenvolvido o conceito do Efeito Fotoelétrico, importantíssimo hoje em dia, que conduziu aos conceitos da dualidade onda-partícula. Perturbado com a interpretação errónea que se poderia fazer das suas descobertas científicas, Einstein terá afirmado: «Relativity applies to physics, not ethics» (link).
